The Department of Performing Arts hosts two research units : the Center of Theatre Semiotics (FNRS) and the postgraduate unit in Performing Arts Studies. It works together with the International Association for Semiotics of Performing Arts.

Bent Holm

Professor at the University of Copenhagen where he teaches drama theory and history. He is a specialist of Pirandello and the Commedia dell'arte.

He is a collaborator of the Danish Encyclopedia. He is also a translator, a dramaturg and a stage director (Odense Theatre, Aarhus Theatre, State Theatre School).

He is holder the Holdberg Medal.

The department of theatre, film and media studies hosts the Master of Arts in Dramaturgy as well as the Erasmus Mundus Master in Performing Arts. With a rather small permanent teaching staff the curriculum is supplemented by seminars given by teachers from the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst and theatres of the region. The idea is to give students a deepened insight into the history and presence of the production of theatre. Workshops with national and international renowned directors provide the practical experiences.”

José Maria PAZ GAGO

Professor José Maria Paz Gago is the president of the Spanish Association of Semiotics (AES), chief administration officer of the Latin-American Federation of Semiotics (FELS) and has been the chief administration officer of the International Association for Semiotic Studies for July 2004. He is a professor of compared literature theory at the University of La Coruna, in the Department of Spanish and Latin philology.

The RITM, founded in 1995 by Jean-Louis Leleu, is, inside the Faculty of Literature, Arts and Human Sciences, the Research unit on Music and Performing Arts (dance and theatre) of the Department of Arts and Educational Structure.

The RITM aims to study the problematics of textual analysis and interpretation as they appear in music and performing arts (in other words, when the production implies a living performance).

The notion of text is understood as the musical or choreographic score as well as the verbal text but also as the result of the production, which can be critically analysed. The goal consists of pinpointing the aesthetics and cultural stakes which are linked to the use of every writing technique (in music, theatre, scenography, choreography, etc.).

One of the main goals of the RITM is to closely associate the theoretical reflection and the artistic pratice. The results of the research are both scientifical papers and musical, theatrical or choreographic works that are performed in acts.

A new field of research is called "ethnomusicology, ethnochoreology and ethnoscenology".

Research at the Department of Theatre of the University Paris 8 is in charge of the work group called "stage and knowledge" (EA1573). This team, directed by prof. Jean-Marie Pradier until 2009, is composed of four specialised laboratories:

- Ethnoscenology: this laboratory is associated with a national and international network of research in ethnoscenology, with the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Paris Nord (Institution of Humanities) and with the French Society of Ethnoscenology SOFETH;

- History and genesis: historiography and genesis of texts;

- Project: law, administration, sociology of performing arts in France;

- Poetics and aesthetics, animated by the International Center of Creation of Poetic Spaces and Research (CICEP).

The gathering in one work group "Stage and knowledge" was decided to increase unity and synergy between those four complementary axes of research.






Concha Perez

Concha Pérez is a professor of French literature at the University of Sevilla, where she has been teaching since 1987. She is specialised in applied narratology. She mainly works on the 18th century and on the Libertine Literature. She published several articles on Sade, Cazotte, Crébillon, Révéroni Saint-Cyr..., as well as on authors such as
Chateaubriand, Stendhal, Bernanos or Boris Vian. She is particularly interested in the problematic of the trangression of genres. She organised several seminaries on this topic, on the relation between narrativity and theatrility in particular.

Since 1994, she has worked for the PhD program in theatre "Ciencias del espectáculo" where she has collaborated in education and in the direction of research projects.
